National Coalition Building Institute Training Available

The University of Iowa has recently established an Affiliate of the National Coalition Building Institute, a non-profit group that works through a coalition-building model to provide leadership training for inclusion and equity, with the goal of eliminating prejudice throughout the world. One of the most visible and well-known programs that NCBI has created is the one-day “Welcoming Diversity and Prejudice Reduction” workshop. This is a highly interactive one-day workshop in which participants work on developing pride in their own identities, explore their “records” about other groups as well as about their own identities, listen to stories and experiences of other groups, and practice engaging hurtful comments, jokes, or slurs. UI now has 32 trained facilitators who can come in to groups, offices, or departments (at no cost)  to lead participants through the experience, in a way that will meet the group’s individual needs. If you have a group or organization that might be interested in bringing the workshop in, or if you’d like to have your name added to a list of people interested in future “open sessions”, please contact Lindsay Jarratt, Diversity Resources Coordinator in the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity, at Lindsay-jarratt@uiowa.edu or by calling (319)335-0705.

Town Hall Update

During the Town Hall meeting last Wednesday (Sept. 7) Vice President for Student Life, Tom Rocklin, discussed a new initiative called “every student, every encounter”. He challenged Division faculty and staff to engage students in micro-conversations about their academics, each time they encountered them.

  • “Have a lot of homework tonight?”
  • “How are classes going?”
  • “Ready for mid-terms?”
  • “What’s your favorite class this semester?”

Any of these questions, along with a host of others, communicates a very important message: We care about your academic progress. We handed out some very nice cups to remind us to create these conversations. If you didn’t get one, stop by the VP Suite and they’ll be glad to give you one.

Here is a video of the presentation for anyone that missed the Fall Town Hall:

Intercultural Training Webinar

Improve Your Intercultural Training through Transformative Learning Share
When: Wednesday, October 12, 2011, 2:00-3:30p.m. CT in the International Commons (1117 UCC).

This webinar is directed toward professionals who provide intercultural training to both incoming and outgoing students, including: study abroad professionals and faculty who organize, design or teach in education abroad programs; international student professionals; student service professionals; and others. This webinar provides content that assumes a basic prior knowledge of intercultural training techniques.

As a trainer focused on intercultural development for your students, you know that international and education abroad students speak most often of the transformation they have gone through as a result of their intercultural experience. You may also know that your effort to engage real transformative learning falls far below expectations. Experience without support does not render the intercultural competence that we strive for in our intercultural training. Instead, it requires a rich integration of the right training and support.

In a rare opportunity, you will have access to four intercultural training experts who will share their own key strategies for transformative learning and provide you with insights into how to move toward intercultural training excellence fostering real transformative learning. In this webinar:

  • Mick Vande Berg asks you to resist the status quo if you seek transformative learning and tells you why.
  • R. Michael Paige describes why learners need intervention in order to transform.
  • Janet Bennett speaks to the many-layered process of training design.
  • Bruce La Brack shares his principles for selecting content for intercultural training.

By the end of this webinar, you will be able poised to:

  •  Critically review your current intercultural training and devise a more effective strategy
  • Consider how the appropriate interventions lead to transformational learning
  • Revise your current training plan to select, sequence, and time activities that more effectively engage students in their intercultural experience

Presenters:

He is a senior faculty at the Summer Institute of Intercultural Communication and is the primary author and editor of the widely used web-based site, “What’s Up With Culture?,” a free internet resource for preparing U.S. American study abroad students going to and returning from an international educational experience.

Welcome Back Week

Class is back in session.

On Iowa! kicked off the Fall 2011 semester with a bang this past weekend. Incoming freshmen took pictures and got to know one another on the historic Kinnick field on Friday, while all returning students had the opportunity to participate in the fun and festivities Saturday and Sunday, including the President’s block party and a concert in Hubbard Park.

This week, Aug. 21-27, is Welcome Back Week and the streets are already sprawling with students. Downtown Iowa City and the UI Campus will come to life with exciting events and community activities.

Tonight, Welcome Back Week and the City of Iowa City provide a great opportunity for students to find their new favorite place to eat. Local food vendors will serve selected menu items outside of their restaurants from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. during the fourth annual Taste of Iowa City. Anyone can purchase tickets to sample vendors of their choice, so skip making dinner and head to downtown Iowa City for samples instead.

The Campus Activities Board and other student organizations have activities and events lined up to keep students entertained for the final few days of Welcome Back Week. For more information, view the full Welcome Back Week schedule here.

On Iowa! Weekend

The University of Iowa introduces a new immersion program for incoming first-year students beginning this week. On Iowa! is designed to help students connect with each other, learn about university traditions, and begin a successful transition to college life—in the classroom and beyond.

From Aug. 19-21, students will be introduced to life on the Hawkeye campus and learn about The IOWA Challenge. The Division of Student Life has worked to ensure that On Iowa! will promote leadership, inclusion, safety and wellness to the diverse, incoming class of 2015, while also creating opportunities for an exciting first week of their college careers.

On Iowa! will kick off the celebratory weekend this Friday, Aug. 19, from 4:00-9:30p.m. at Kinnick Stadium. First-year students will get together for a group photo on the field, followed by a guest speech from a Hawkeye icon.

The Class of 2015 is also invited to Hubbard Park on Saturday night from 10 p.m. to midnight, for a special outdoor concert with music provided by DJ duo White Panda. Convocation on the Pentacrest and a block party at UI President Sally Mason’s home will bring the program to an end this Sunday afternoon.

For more information and specific details, check out the On Iowa! schedule here.
